Tom Clancy was an American novelist. He is known for his military thrillers, particularly featuring the Jack Ryan character. He was a part owner of the Baltimore Orioles of the American League.

He was the son of Catherine Mary, who worked in a store, and Thomas Leo Kirsch/Clancy, a postal worker. His father was adopted and raised by his own maternal grandparents, the Clancys, after his own parents’ deaths.

Tom was raised in Northwood, in east Baltimore. He was married to freelance journalist Alexandra Marie Llewellyn, until his death. He had four children with his former wife, nurse Wanda Thomas King; and a daughter with Alexandra. Alexandra’s father was businessperson J. Bruce Llewellyn.

Tom’s paternal grandfather was Frank/Francis Leonard Kirsch (the son of John M. Kursch and Magdalena “Lena” McLewee). Frank was born in Maryland.

Tom’s paternal grandmother was Margaret M. “Meg” Clancy (the daughter of James E. Clancy and Bridget A. Dugan). Margaret was born in Maryland, to Irish parents.

Tom’s maternal grandfather was Thomas Howard J. Langan (the son of John Vincent Langan and Ella F. Finn). Thomas was born in Maryland. John was the son of Irish parents, John Langan, from Roscommon, and Catherine/Katherine “Kate”/Katie.

Tom’s maternal grandmother was Catherine Backof (the daughter of George Backof and Kunigunda Rein). Catherine was born in Maryland. George was born in Bavaria, Germany, the son of Michael Backof and Margarethe Nagengust. Kunigunda was born in Maryland, the daughter of German parents, Nickolaus/Nicholas Rein, from Aschaffenburg, Lower Franconia, Bavaria, and Elizabeth Siefert.
