Tobe Hooper was an American director, screenwriter, and producer. A prominent name in horror, he directed the films Eggshells, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Eaten Alive, The Funhouse, Poltergeist, Lifeforce, Invaders from Mars, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Spontaneous Combustion, Night Terrors, The Mangler, Crocodile (2000), Toolbox Murders (2004), Mortuary (2005), and Djinn (2013); the mini-series Salem’s Lot (1979); episodes of Masters of Horror; and the made-for-tv movies I’m Dangerous Tonight, Body Bags, which he co-directed; and The Apartment Complex. He also co-wrote his Eggshells, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Spontaneous Combustion, and The Mangler.
Tobe was the son of Lois Belle/Isabelle and Norman William Ray Hooper, who owned a theatre in San Angelo. He had a son with his former wife Maev Margaret Noonan.
Tobe’s paternal grandfather was William Randolph Hooper (the son of George Dallas Hooper and Louisa Jane Speer). William was born in Texas. George was the son of Isaac Martin Hooper and Jane Amanda Platt. Louisa was the daughter of James D. Speer and Elizabeth Wiggs.
