He was born in Northampton, Northamptonshire, to Australian parents, Rosamunde and David Minchin. He was raised in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. Tim is married to Sarah, with whom he has two children.

Tim’s paternal grandfather was Max Ellison Minchin (the son of Max Ernest Minchin and Annie Isabel Scott). Tim’s great-grandfather Max was the son of Ernest William Minchin, whose father was born in County Tripperary, Munster, Ireland and whose mother was of English descent; and of Helen Victoria Kildahl.

Tim’s paternal grandmother was named Joan Margaret Higgs.
