Susan B. Anthony was an American social reformer and women’s rights activist. She was a leader of women’s suffrage in her time, and also participated in the American Anti-Slavery Society.

Susan was the daughter of Lucy (Read) and Daniel Anthony, who managed a large cotton mill, and was an abolitionist and temperance advocate. She was raised mostly in Battenville, New York. Her family was Quaker, and was of Colonial American (mostly English) descent.

Susan was the sister of publisher, women’s suffragist, and abolitionist Daniel Read Anthony, and suffragist Mary Stafford Anthony. Her nephew, Daniel’s son, was Republican party politician Daniel Read Anthony, Jr., who was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas, from May 23, 1907 to March 3, 1929. Her great-niece was journalist, writer, activist, and substance abuse counselor Susan B. Anthony II (Susan Brownell Anthony II).

During her youth, she added “B.” to her name, as interest in middle names grew across America.

Susan’s paternal grandfather was Humphrey Anthony (the son of David Anthony and Judith Hicks). Humphrey was born in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts. David was the son of William Anthony and Alice Eddy. Judith was the daughter of Thomas Hicks and Judith Akin.

Susan’s paternal grandmother was Hannah Lapham (the daughter of Joshua Lapham and Hannah Sherman). Susan’s grandmother Hannah was born in Adams, Berkshire, Massachusetts. Joshua was the son of John Lapham, Jr. and Mary Russell. Susan’s great-grandmother Hannah was the daughter of David Sherman and Abigail Hathaway.

Susan’s maternal grandfather was Daniel Read (the son of Joshua Read/Reed and Elizabeth/Betsey/Betty Barney). Daniel was born in Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts. Joshua fought in the Revolutionary War. He was the son of Joseph Read and Hannah Titus. Elizabeth was the daughter of Daniel Barney and Alice/Else Wheaton.

Susan’s maternal grandmother was Susannah Richardson (the daughter of Jonathan Richardson and Mary Woodward). Susannah was born in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Jonathan was the son of David Richardson and Remember Ward. Mary was the daughter of Ebenezer Woodward and Mindwell Stone.

Susan was a second cousin, three times removed, of actor Christopher Lloyd. Susan’s paternal great-grandparents, Joshua Lapham and Hannah Sherman, were also Christopher’s maternal great-great-great-great-grandparents.
