Ruth Chatterton is an American actress, aviator, and novelist.

She was the daughter of Lillian/Lilian (Reed) and Walter Smith Chatterton, an architect. She attended Mrs. Hagen’s School in Pelham, New York. She was married to actor Barry Thomson, until his death.

Ruth’s paternal grandfather was George H. Chatterton (the son of John Carson Chatterton and Helen M. Halloway). John was born in Dutchess, New York, the son of George Chatterton, who was English; and of Mary Ann Carson. Helen was born in New York, the daughter of Seneca Haloway and Jeannette Manchester.

Ruth’s paternal grandmother was Mary Caroline Smith (the daughter of Eliphalet Cadwalder Smith and Caroline Robinson Peters). Mary was born in Newark, New Jersey. Eliphalet was the son of Cadwallader/Cadwalader D. Smith and Anna Weise/Weis, who had German ancestry. Caroline was the daughter of James Peters (born Paul du Chemin).

Ruth’s maternal grandfather was named Andrew Reed. Andrew was born in Walden, New York, and was a shipwright.
