A left-back, he played for Crystal Palace, Tonbridge Angels, Gravesend & Northfleet, Maidstone United, Ashford Town (Kent), Berea Park, and Carshalton Athletic. He managed Halmstad, Bristol City (including in an assistant role), Oddevold, Örebro, Malmö, Neuchâtel Xamax, the Switzerland national team, Inter Milan (including in a caretaker role), Blackburn Rovers, Grasshoppers, Copenhagen, Udinese, the United Arab Emirates national team, Viking, the Finland national team, Fulham, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, the England national team, England U21 (in a caretaker role), Crystal Palace, and Watford.

Roy is the son of Kathleen, a baker, and William “Bill” Hodgson, a bus driver. He is married to Sheila, with whom he has a son. Roy speaks English, Swedish, German, Italian, and French.
