She is the daughter of John George Whitfield McIver, a photographer, and Ann Coney, an artist. Her brother is actor and musician Paul McIver. She is married to George Byrne. George is married to Australian actress Rose Byrne.

In an interview with Young Hollywood, Rose stated that her surname is of Scottish origin from a few generations back.

Rose’s paternal grandfather was George Kirkwood McIver (the son of Peter McIver and Annie Simpson). Peter was the son of Roderick McIver.

Rose’s paternal grandmother is named Joan Ashdown.
