Peter Mullan is a Scottish actor, filmmaker, and activist. His roles include the films Braveheart, Trainspotting, My Name Is Joe, The Claim (2000), Session 9, and the Harry Potter franchise. He has directed and written the films Orphans (1998), The Magdalene Sisters, and Neds.

He was brought up in a working class Roman Catholic family. His surname is Irish. The extent of his Irish ancestry is not clear.

He has three children with his former wife, actor and scriptwriter Ann Swan; and one child with his former partner, activist Robina Qureshi.
