Nicki was born Onika Tanya Maraj on Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, the daughter of Carol (Daniel) and Robert Maraj, a financial executive. Her parents were both gospel singers. Her paternal grandfather, whose surname was Maraj, was of Indian-Trinidadian, from India, descent; her father was of Dougla background, a Caribbean term for a mix of Indian and African. It appears that the rest of her family is of African-Trinidadian ancestry. She has evidently also stated that her great-grandfather is Japanese. It is not clear if this is accurate.
Nicki was raised on Saint James initially, though her mother immigrated to New York City, U.S., and later brought Nicki and her brother over when Nicki was five, settling in Queens.
Nicki is married to Kenneth Petty, with whom she has a son.

She’s so pathetic for starting fights on Twitter and complaining because her disgusting and stupid video didn’t get nominated for a VMA. It just amazes me that people like this filth!
BTW when will she ever fade away? Her music sucks and she tries to come off as biracial. I can’t stand Nicki. She’s nothing special. Every girl from the hood looks like her. She’s thinks she’s so sexy, unique and exotic when she’s not and her butt is fake.
She is biracial in a way, her grandpa was Indian. She’s a quarter Indian, I consider her mixed.
She may look like everyone with weave and makeup. But everything about her facial features screams DOUGLA. Shes a Trini she looks like other Trinis with her mix. Btw Nicki never claimed to be bi-racial you ask her what is she she’ll tell you like most people will. She identifies as a Black woman. If you look at her old pictures she looks like a young Trini woman with a unique look. We all have a uniqueness such as most Trinis and Guyanese.. We have ancestors from Africa and India who were slaves and servants which is why we work so hard to this day and grind. We have that blood in us.
Indian? She’s a regular black girl who wants to seem mixed. She’s overhyped trash and a Lady Gaga copycat. She’s calls herself “Minaj” which means ménage a trois lol. She’s a ugly hoe who doesn’t deserve to be so famous. Cher Lloyd is prettier than her.
