Martin Schulz is a German politician. He was Leader of the Social Democratic Party, from 19 March, 2017 to 13 February, 2018. He has been a Member of the Bundestag for North Rhine-Westphalia, since 24 September, 2017.

His father, Albert Schulz, a police officer, came from the Saarland and grew up in a mining family who had social-democratic tendencies, while his mother, Clara, from a middle class background, was a founding member of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) in her hometown, Würselen.

Martin is married to Inge. He has two children.

Martin was previously also a Member of the European Parliament for Germany, from 19 July, 1994 to 19 February, 2017, Leader of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, from 5 July, 2004 to 17 January, 2012, and President of the European Parliament, from 17 January, 2012 to to 17 January, 2017.
