Martin O’Malley is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, since December 20, 2023. He was previously Mayor of Baltimore, from December 7, 1999 to January 17, 2007, and Governor of Maryland, from January 17, 2007 to January 21, 2015.

He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 2016.

Martin is married to Baltimore City District Court judge Katie (Curran) O’Malley, with whom he has four children.

Martin’s paternal grandfather was William Patrick O’Malley (the son of Martin O’Malley and Bridget O’Toole). William was born in Pennsylvania. Martin’s great-grandparents Martin and Bridget were both Irish. Bridget was the daughter of Philip O’Toole and Mary Coalman.

Martin’s paternal grandmother was Marie Genevieve Clarty (the daughter of John J. Clarty and Mary Ann McGinty). Martin’s grandmother Marie Genevieve was born in Pennsylvania. John was born in Ireland, the son of Thomas Cloherty. Martin’s great-grandmother Mary Ann was born in New York, the daughter of Edward McGinty and Catherine Donohue/Donahue, and was also of Irish descent.

Martin’s maternal grandfather was Joseph George Suelzer, Jr. (the son of Joseph George Suelzer and Sophia Marie Klueppel). Martin’s grandfather Joseph was born in Indiana. Martin’s great-grandfather Joseph was born in Germany, the son of Johannes Suelzer and Agnes Courth/Court. Sophia was born in Indiana, to Dutch parents, Johannes Gerhardus Kluppel and Marie Kamphuis. Martin’s grandfather’s sister, Sister Alexa Suelzer, was a prominent nun who was a writer, educator, and theologian.

Martin’s maternal grandmother was Martha Esther Dix (the daughter of Frank J. Dix and Luella Inella Mary Meyer). Martha was born in Indiana. Frank was the son of Seth J. Dix and Esther Elizabeth Bolger, who was Irish. Luella was the daughter of Charles F. F. Meyer/Meyers, who was German, and of Martha Campbell.
