Marion Cotillard is a French actress, singer, songwriter, musician, and environmentalist. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for La Vie en Rose (2007). She is also famous for her roles in the films My Sex Life… or How I Got Into an Argument, Taxi, Furia, Pretty Things, Big Fish, the musical Nine, Inception, and The Dark Knight Rises. Marion is the daughter of Niseema Theillaud (born Monique Theillaud), an actress and drama teacher, and Jean-Claude Cotillard, an actor, teacher, director, and mime. She has two children with her partner, actor, film director, and screenwriter Guillaume Canet.

Her father’s family is Breton, an ethnic group found in the region of Brittany, in France. Her mother’s family is French.

Marion’s mother has been described as having Kabyle, a Berber ethnic group from Algeria, ancestry. This is not accurate.

Marion’s paternal grandfather was Edouard Jean Cotillard (the son of Toussaint Cotillard and Jeanne Marie Allenic). Edouard was from La Musse, Laurenan, Cotes-d’Armor, Brittany. Toussaint was the son of Paul Cotillard and Anne Marie Le Loup. Marion’s great-grandmother Jeanne was the daughter of Mathurin Allenic and Perrine Marguerite Huguet.

Marion’s paternal grandmother was Léontine Marie-Louise Raulet (the daughter of Jean François Raulet and Marie Joseph Pencolé). Léontine was from Chaubuisson, Laurenan, Cotes-d’Armor, Brittany. Jean François was the son of Mathurin Raulet and Marie Françoise Caillibote. Marion’s great-grandmother Marie Joseph was the daughter of Joseph Pencolé and Jeanne Nicolas.

Marion’s maternal grandfather was Raymond Georges Albert Theillaud (the son of Jules Xavier Theillaud and Eugénie Madeleine Bandel). Raymond was born in Paris. Jules was the son of François Theillaud and Catherine Moreau. Eugénie was of German descent, and was the daughter of Pierre Maurice Bandel and Anne Marie Kaufmann.

Marion’s maternal grandmother was Simone Fournier (the daughter of Georges Auguste Fournier and Léonie Augustine Tellier). Georges was the son of Isidore Alexandre Fournier and Sophie Léonie Paris. Marion’s great-grandmother Léonie was the daughter of Henri Tellier and Charlotte Rousselot.

  1. TAVA says:

    Marion is not Kabyle.
The reason why some people think she’s part Kabyle is because her mother who is also an actress uses the stage name Niseema, Niseema is a Kabyle name.
Actually Marion’s mother real name is Monique which is a typical French name. Marion’s mother side all have typical French names and were born in France.
Marion said several times she’s part Breton and French but never mentionned having Kabyle blood.

    • SClife says:

Niseema is an Arabic name i belive, so as Omar (used a lot in Mexico)/Salma/Dena..etc, carrying an Arabic name doesn’t mean you are an Arab,Kabyle..etc. And as you stated Marion’s mother real name isn’t even Niseema. Wikipedia is the source of this fake claim, it’s a fraud site.

  2. Manila says:

Raymond was born in Paris. Jules was the son of François Theillaud and Catherine Moreau. Eugénie was of German descent, and was the daughter of Pierre Maurice Bandel and Anne Marie Kaufmann.

  3. Manila says:

Jean Francois Raulet and Marie Joseph Pencole -> Jean François Raulet and Marie Joseph Pencolé

Jean François was the son of Mathurin Raulet and Marie Françoise Caillibote. Marie Joseph was the daughter of Joseph Pencolé and Jeanne Nicolas.

Raymond Theillaud’s middle names are Georges and Albert, and was the son of Jules Xavier Theillaud and Eugénie Madeleine Bandel.

REMARK: If you would like to find Raymond’s birth record, good luck because Paris has 20 arrondissements! Once you have found his birth record, proceed to his parents’ marriage record. Please, take note on the arrondissement number. Start from here: http://canadp-archivesenligne.paris.fr/archives_etat_civil/1860_1902_actes/index.php

“French (including Breton)” is not quite correct – the Bretons once came from what is now England and claim to have a definitely Celtic identity; they don’t identify with the French (though the French are not really the descendants of the Franks but a Celtic/Germanic mixture), but define themselves against the French.

According to nationality, the Bretons are French, of course, but according to ethnicity, they are not.

    • guyinsf says:

But Bretons are celtic in origin and non-Breton French people also have a lot of celtic in them through the original Gauls so genetically they are probably very similar.
