Luke Appling was an American professional baseball player and minor league manager. He was a shortstop in Major League Baseball (MLB), who played his entire career for the Chicago White Sox. Luke was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as a White Sox player in 1964. He was nicknamed “Old Aches and Pains.”
Luke was the son of Dola and Lucius Benjamin Appling. He was married to Faye Dodd, until his death, with whom he had three children. Luke was a fourth cousin, twice removed, of actor Cameron Palatas, through their shared Sappenfield ancestors.
Luke’s paternal grandfather was Henry Benjamin Appling (the son of William Daniel Appling and Martha Harrison/Anne Booth). Henry was born in Georgia.
