Lucy’s paternal grandfather was Timothy Ryan (the son of John Ryan and Annie Walsh). Timothy was born in Westport, Buller District, West Coast, New Zealand, of Irish descent.

Lucy’s paternal grandmother was Gladys Ida Cartwright (the daughter of Francis Edgar Cartwright and Florence Smith). Gladys was English, born in Birmingham, West Midlands. Francis was the son of George Dawson Cartwright and Emma Wiggin. Florence was the daughter of Edwin Smith and Emily Louisa Belton.
