Jeremy Hunt is an English politician. A member of the Conservative Party, he was Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, from 12 May, 2010 to 4 September, 2012, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, from 4 September, 2012 to 9 July, 2018, Foreign Secretary, from 9 July, 2018 to 24 July, 2019, and Chancellor of the Exchequer, from 14 October, 2022 to 5 July, 2024; as well as a Member of Parliament for South West Surrey, from 5 May, 2005 to 30 May, 2024, and for Godalming and Ash, since 4 July, 2024, among other duties.
He is the son of Meriel Eve (Givan), Lady Hunt, and Admiral Sir Nicholas John Streynsham Hunt, GCB LVO DL, a senior Royal Navy officer, who was Commander-in-Chief Fleet, from 1985 to 1987. His father was born in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. He is married to Chinese, Lucia Guo, who is from Xi’an, and with whom he has three children.
Jeremy’s paternal grandfather was Brigadier John Montgomerie Hunt, of the 5th Battalion, 2nd Punjab Regiment, Indian Army.
Jeremy’s paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Yates (the daughter of Walter Baldwyn Yates, CBE, and of Rose Caroline Bankes). Walter was a barrister, who was a member of the London County Council and Crown Umpire under the Unemployment Insurance Scheme of 1911. He was the son of Joseph St. John Yates, a County Court Judge, and of Emily Augusta Scott, and a descendant of judge Joseph Yates. Jeremy’s great-grandmother Rose was the daughter of John Scott Bankes, whose father was a reverend, and of Anne Jervis. Rose was descended from Lord Chancellor John Scott, 1st Earl of Eldon, and from John Wynne, Bishop of St Asaph and Bath and Wells. Rose’s brother, Jeremy’s great-great-great-uncle, was the Right Hon. Sir John Eldon Bankes, Lord Justice of Appeal.
Jeremy’s maternal grandfather was named Major Henry Cooke Givan.
Jeremy is descended from Streynsham Master, a pioneer of the East India Company, who was Agent of Madras, from 27 January, 1678 to 3 July, 1681.
