Janet Yellen is an American economist and educator. She has been U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, since January 26, 2021. She was previously a Member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, from August 12, 1994 to February 17, 1997, and again, from October 4, 2010 to February 3, 2018, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, from February 18, 1997 to August 3, 1999, Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve, from October 4, 2010 to February 3, 2014, and Chair of the Federal Reserve, from February 3, 2014 to February 3, 2018.

Janet is the daughter of Anna Ruth, an elementary school teacher, and Julius Yellen, a family physician. Her brother, John, is a program director for archaeology at the National Science Foundation. Her father was of Polish Jewish descent and her mother was of Polish Jewish and German Jewish ancestry.

Janet is married to George Akerlof, a Nobel Prize-winning economist. George is the son of a Swedish immigrant father and a Jewish American mother.

Janet’s paternal grandfather was Jacob Yonkel Yelin/Yellen (the son of Gdalie Yelin/Jelen and Kejla Beyla Gilberg). Jacob was born in Sokolów Podlaski, Mazowieckie, Poland. Kejla was the daughter of Joel Herskowicz Gilberg and Dvosya Erlich.

Janet’s paternal grandmother was named Sarah Kowadlo. Sarah was born in Sokolów Podlaski.

Janet’s maternal grandfather was Elias Charles Blumenthal (the son of Lejzor Hirsz Blumenthal and Mnucha Inda Rozen). Elias was born in Suwalki, Suwałki County, Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland. Lejzor was the son of Movshe Blumenthal and Henia Risa.

Janet’s maternal grandmother was Ida Nathan (the daughter of William Nathan and Frederica Raunheim). Ida was born in New York. William was the son of German Jewish parents, Louis Nathan, from Hamburg, and Hannah Nathan. Frederica was also the daughter of German Jewish parents, Gabriel Raunheim and Betsy Schloss.
