James Duke Mason is an American writer and LGBTQ activist.

He is the son of singer, musician, and author Belinda Carlisle and politician, film producer, and actor Morgan Mason. His father was born in California, to British parents.

James’ paternal grandfather was actor James Mason (the son of John Mason and Mabel Hattersley Gaunt). James’s grandfather James was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. John was a wealthy textile merchant, and was the son of George Simpson Mason and Ann Wilkinson. Mabel was the daughter of Joseph Shaw Gaunt and Emily Hattersley.

James’ paternal grandmother was actress, author, and screenwriter Pamela Mason, also known as Pamela Kellino (born Pamela Helen Ostrer; the daughter of Isidore/Isadore Ostrer and Helen Dorothy Spear-Morgan). Pamela was born in Westgate-on-Sea, Kent, England. Isidore was a financier and film producer, who was born in London, England, to Polish Jewish parents, Nathan Ostrer and Francesca/Fanny. Helen was British.

James’ maternal grandfather was named Harold E. Carlisle. Harold is said to have Native American ancestry.

James’ maternal grandmother was Joanne M. Thompson (the daughter of Roy Thompson and Ruth Jeanette Rook). Ruth was the daughter of William Franklin Rook and Josephine Levina Onions, whose mother and paternal grandparents were English.
