Gayle’s paternal grandfather was Edward Crozier Rutherfurd (the son of John Morris Livingston Rutherfurd and Florence Crozier/Crozer). Edward was born in New York, and was a pioneer in exporting European cars to the U.S. He was a prominent Floridian, who was a co-founder and governor of Florida’s chapter of the General Society of Colonial Wars. John was the son of Walter Rutherfurd and Martha Louisa Jones. Florence was the daughter of Edward Crozer and Florence Robinson.

Among Gayle’s paternal grandfather’s prominent ancestors were John Rutherfurd, a politician and land surveyor, who was a U.S. Senator from New Jersey, from March 4, 1791 to December 5, 1798, for the Federalist Party; Moncure Robinson, a civil engineer, railroad planner, builder, and railroad and steamboat owner, who is considered one of America’s leading Antebellum period civil engineers; John Price Crozer, a textile manufacturer, banker, and philanthropist; Lewis Morris, a Founding Father, landowner, and developer from Morrisania, New York, who signed the Declaration of Independence; and his father, Lewis Morris, who was Speaker of the New York General Assembly, from June 15, 1737 to October 20, 1738.

Gayle’s paternal grandmother is Patricia Ann O’Shields (the daughter of Frederick Lewis O’Shields and Bessie Elizabeth Rich). Patricia was born in Alabama, and has deep roots in the U.S. Frederick was the son of William Elmo O’Shields and Beulah Kay Kiker. Bessie was the daughter of William Lon Rich and Viola Vashti Jett.

Gayle’s maternal grandfather was John Richard Barnes (the son of Charles E. Barnes and Dorothy Beryl Routh). John was born in Hammond, Indiana. Charles was the son of Charles Elmer Barnes and Louiza M. Branum. Dorothy was the daughter of Abraham Lincoln Routh and Drusilla Adaline Brown.
