Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist, short story writer, and journalist. He wrote the novels The Torrents of Spring, The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, To Have and Have Not, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Across the River and into the Trees, and The Old Man and the Sea. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

Ernest was the son of Grace H. (Hall), a musician, and Clarence Edmonds Hemingway, a physician. His father was of mostly Colonial American (English) descent, along with one quarter German (including some Swiss-German). Ernest’s maternal grandparents were English immigrants.

He was married to journalist and author Mary Welsh Hemingway, until his death. He had a son, Canadian-American fly fisherman, conservationist, and writer Jack Hemingway, with his former wife Elizabeth Hadley Richardson; and two children, wildlife manager and writer Patrick Hemingway and physician and writer Gloria Hemingway, with his former wife, journalist Pauline Pfeiffer. He was the grandfather of actresses and models Margaux Hemingway and Mariel Hemingway, through his son Jack; and of author and freelance journalist Lorian Hemingway and Canadian-American author John Hemingway, through his daughter Gloria. He was also the great-grandfather of model and actress Dree Hemingway and illustrator and model Langley Fox, who are Mariel’s children.

Ernest’s paternal grandfather was Anson Tyler Hemingway (the son of Allen Hemingway and Harriet Louisa/Louise/Loiza/Linsley Tyler). Anson was born in Plymouth, Litchfield, Connecticut, and had deep roots in the state; he was of Colonial American (English) descent. Allen was the son of Jacob Street Hemingway and Lucretia Smith. Harriet was the daughter of Anson Tyler and Harriet Linsley. Allen and Harriet were second cousins, through their Linsley lines.

Ernest’s paternal grandmother was Adelaide Edmonds (the daughter of John Wesley Edmonds and Margaret Miller). Adelaide was born in Nashua, Ogle, Illinois. John was born in New York, the son of Samuel Edmonds, whose parents were from Yorkshire, England, and of Sarah/Sally Plumb, who was of Colonial American (English) descent, with deep roots in Massachusetts. Margaret was born in London, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Jacob Miller/Mueller, who was born in Meuller Castle on the Rhine, West Prussia, Germany, and of Elizabeth Dickout, who was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, also with German ancestry.

Ernest’s maternal grandfather was Ernest Miller Hall (the son of Charles E. Hall and Mary Dunhill Miller). Ernest was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. Mary was the daughter of The Rev. William Edward Miller and Mary Dunhill.

Ernest’s maternal grandmother was Caroline Hancock (the daughter of Capt. Alexander Hancock and Caroline Sydes). Ernest’s grandmother Caroline was born in Bristol, England. Alexander was the son of John Hancock and Sarah Tyley. Ernest’s great-grandmother Caroline was the daughter of Edward Sydes and Charlotte.
