By accident, I came across a Peter VanCamp who emigrated from New York to Durham County (Port Perry, Emily’s birthplace, is is Durham Co.), Ontario, Canada sometime in the early 19th century. I think this might be one of her ancestors. Trying to connect the dots now.
At any rate, Peter’s ancestor was Jan Van Campen, born 1612 in Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands. Regarding the debate above about the Van Camp name – she’s Dutch.
Finally, made the connection. She is the 5th great granddaughter of Peter VanCamp. She is my 11th cousin. She is Dutch, Irish, English, Scottish I think.
she must have other ancestry, perhaps English and Irish
VanCamp can both be Flemish(Belgian) and Dutch surnames, but she most likely is Dutch also this website mentions her as ”Canadian people of Dutch descent”
CORRECTION: The surname looks Flemish rather than Dutch. Flemish surnames often have a C or CK in them where a similar Dutch surname has a K. But van Camp implies “from a place called Camp” and google maps confirms that Camp is in Belgium, not the Netherlands
actually I was mistaken about there being a place called Camp. Nevertheless, the Dutch equivalent surname is van de kamp so I still maintain that van camp is flemish instead. I additionally tracked down a lawyer called Eddy van Kamp who lives and works near Antwerp which is definitely in Flanders.
oops Eddy van Camp that should have read
There’s a town called Oostkamp in Belgium.
With a k.
But since Flemish is Dutch, the name is of Dutch origin.
However her family may very well be Belgian.
