Her roles include the films Steam (2007), Knucklehead, The Weekend (2018), Someone Great, Fatherhood (2021), The Harder They Fall, Jurassic World Dominion, Poolman, and Imaginary, the series Underground, Shots Fired, She’s Gotta Have It, and The Twilight Zone, and the made-for-tv movie Firelight.

She is married to actor Alano Miller.

DeWanda’s maternal grandfather was Ellis Leon Wise (the son of Sylvester B. Fowler and Ella Mae Wise). Ellis was born in Maryland. Ella was the daughter of George Frank Wise and Ella Gibson.

DeWanda’s maternal grandmother was named Margie Ardella Hackett.
