Dave Bing is an American professional basketball player, businessperson, and politician. A point guard, he played for the Detroit Pistons, as well as the Washington Bullets and Boston Celtics, of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He averaged over 20 points and six assists per game, and won the Most Valuable Player award in 1976. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980. Dave founded processing company Bing Steel, later the Bing Group, a conglomerate, and one of the largest steel companies in Michigan. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Mayor of Detroit, Michigan, from May 11, 2009 to January 1, 2014.
Dave is the son of Juanita Leagones, a housekeeper, and Hasker Bing, a bricklayer and Baptist church deacon. He is married to Yvette.
Dave’s paternal grandfather was Arthur B. Bing (the son of Marshal Bing and Maria Ellaway Scott).
Dave’s paternal grandmother was named Louise Moore.
