Gale Sayers was an American professional football player. A halfback and return specialist, he played his seven-year professional career with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He was regarded as one of the greatest, and was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1977. He was also athletic director for Southern Illinois and interim athletic director for Tennessee State. He was nicknamed the “Kansas Comet.”

Gale was the son of Bernice and Roger Earl Sayers. He was married to Ardythe, until his death. The couple were philanthropists in Chicago.

Gale’s paternal grandfather was named Edward D. Sayers (the son of William Sayer and Mary J.). Edward was born in Richmond, Nebraska.

Gale’s paternal grandmother was named Maggie.

Gale’s maternal grandfather was named David Cannon.
