William was born in Pennsylvania, to a father from Germany and a mother from Pennsylvania. Katherine and her parents were from Pennsylvania.

Clare’s paternal grandmother was Margaret Ann DeWeese (the daughter of William Brewster DeWeese and Mabel Matilda Martin). Margaret was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. William was the son of James A. DeWeese and Mary Amanda Taylor. Mabel was the daughter of John Alvin Martin and Margaret Matilda Sproul, who was entierly of Scots-Irish/Northern Irish descent.
