Carlos Slim is a Mexican business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. He was ranked the richest person in the world by Forbes in 2013, and is regarded as the richest person in Latin America. He runs the conglomerate Grupo Carso.

Carlos is the son of Linda Helú Atta and Julián Slim Haddad (born Khalil Salim Haddad Aglamaz), who established a dry goods retail store, La Estrella de Oriente/The Star of the Orient, and later became a real estate millionaire. His parents were Maronite Christians of Lebanese descent. His father was born in Jezzine, then part of the Ottoman Empire. His mother was born in Parral, Chihuahua, to parents who had founded one of the first Arab-language magazines in Mexico.

His cousin is Mexican billionaire businessperson Alfredo Harp Helú.

He has six children, including businessperson Carlos Slim Domit, with his late wife Soumaya Gemayel, who was involved in philanthropy. Soumaya was a niece of Lebanese political leader Pierre Gemayel, of the prominent Gemayel family.

Carlos’ paternal grandfather was named Gantus/Gastón Slim.

Carlos’ paternal grandmother was named Nour Haddad.

Carlos’ maternal grandfather was Saleh/José Antonio Helú (the son of Antonio Helú and Bediha Mansour).

Carlos’ maternal grandmother was Wadiha/Emilia Alexandra Atta Mutrán (the daughter of Alejandro Atta and Rosa Mutrán). Wadiha was born in Zahle, Zahlé, Bekaa.
