Carlos P. Garcia was a Filipino teacher, poet, orator, lawyer, public official, political economist, organized guerrilla, and Commonwealth military leader. He was the eighth President of the Philippines, from March 18, 1957 to December 30, 1961. He was also Governor of Bohol, from December 30, 1933 to December 30, 1941, Senator of the Philippines, from May 25, 1945 to December 30, 1953, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, from December 30, 1953 to August 22, 1957, Vice President of the Philippines, from December 30, 1953 to March 18, 1957, and President of the 1971 Philippine Constitutional Convention, from June 1, 1971 to June 14, 1971.
His father, Policronio García y Babila, or Policronio Babila García in Filipino, served as mayor of Talibo, Bohol for four terms. His mother was named Ambrosia Polestico. He was married to Leonila Garcia (born Leonila de la Serna Dimataga), with whom he had a daughter. All of Carlos’ grandparents were emigrants, from Bangued, Abra.
