His concert tours are some of the highest-grossing in history.
Bruno is the son of Bernadette del Pedro Bayot and Peter S. Hernandez, who were musically-inclined, his father performing rock and roll and his mother a singer and dancer. He was raised in Honolulu’s Waikiki neighborhood. Growing up, he was exposed to rock, reggae, hip hop, and R&B. He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 2003, for his music career.
His father is from Brooklyn, New York. Bruno’s paternal grandfather was Puerto Rican and Bruno’s paternal grandmother was Ashkenazi Jewish, of Hungarian Jewish and Ukrainian Jewish descent. Bruno’s mother was from Manila, Phillippines, and was of Filipino [including Cebuano and Tagalog], and some Spanish [Castilian], ancestry. Through his Puerto Rican line, he has at least 1/256th Italian ancestry.
He was nicknamed Bruno due to his resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino.
Bruno is a second cousin, once removed, of Filipino actor Eddie Gutierrez, and the third cousin of Eddie’s children, actors Tonton Gutierrez, Richard Gutierrez, and Raymond Gutierrez, and model Ruffa Gutierrez. Bruno’s maternal great-great-grandparents, Mariano Herranz Heras and Mamerta Cañizares Secuya, were also Eddie’s maternal great-grandparents.
Bruno’s paternal grandfather was Peter Hernandez (the son of Almecio Hernández Aquino and Fabiana Sebastiana Vázquez Garcia). Bruno’s grandfather Peter was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Almecio was born in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, the son of Manuel Hernández Muñoz and Mercedes Aquino Hernández. Fabiana was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, the biological daughter of José Vázquez Romero and María del Rosario García Betancourt, and was adopted by Bernardo Peña Martinez and Rafaela Perosa Gerardez.
Bruno’s paternal grandmother was Mildred Dubov (the daughter of William Wolf Dubovis/Dubov and Bella Berger). William was a Jewish emigrant, from Kiev, and was the son of Sholom Yoseph DuBovis and Malka Weissman. Bella was born in New York City, to Hungarian Jewish parents, Joseph Berger and Louise Wohlberg.
Bruno’s maternal grandfather was Romeo Amando Maria “Eugene” Herranz Bayot (the son of Jesús María Bayot Fuentes and Consolación “Consuelo” Herranz Cañizares). Romeo was born in Manila, Philippines. Jesús was also born in Manila, the son of Gabriel Bayot and Josefa Fuentes. Consolación was born in Segovia, Spain. Consolación’s father, Mariano Herranz Heras, was Spanish, from Nava de la Asunción, Segovia. Consolación’s mother, Mamerta Cañizares Secuya, or Mamerta Secuya Cañizares in Filipino, was born in Talisay, Cebu, Phillippines, the daughter of Alejo Cañizares Canindot, or Alejo Canindot Cañizares in Filipino, also of Talisay; and of Sabina Secuya Larombe, or Sabina Larombe Secuya in Filipino, of Minglanilla, Cebu. The surname Secuya is also spelled as Sycuya, which is of possibly Chinese origin, but it is not clear if Sabina had Chinese ancestry.
Bruno’s maternal grandmother was named Soledad San Pedro. Soledad was born in Baguio City, Benguet, Philippines.

I Love Bruno Mars! He Sings Amazing! :)
The Negritos or Aboriginal Filipinos, which according to recent studies are not the 1st Filipinos and currently consist of less than .0003% of the Filipino population. They may look black but they are the most genetically distant human population from Africans at most loci studied thus far (except for MC1R, which codes for dark skin). Majority of Filipinos are of Austronesian decent mixed with other Asian races for thousands of years and had an influx of genetic influence from other races specially Europeans during their colonial period.
Bruno Mar’s mother has brown or “morena” skin, sharp chin, small aquiline nose and big deep set chinky eyes with double eyelids which is a bit exotic looking even from the stereotypical average looking Filipina. His maternal grandparents are from Cebu Philippines and their genealogy indicates that they have Austronesian, Spanish, East Indian, Chinese, Arab and Greek decent. Most Filipinos and Puerto Ricans are of mixed racial ancestry therefore Bruno Mars is of mixed racial ancestry that’s it.
Um, wow. Their genealogy really shows all those different ethnicities? May I ask where you acquired that information from?
It’s really not that surprising.
I know he was only born in hawaii, but using that as an example, a Hawaiian person could be of polynesian, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish or African descent because of the huge amount of those ethnicities living there. Everyone knows Filipinos are a very mixed bag- there is a huuuuge variation in looks.
Also ifsomeone tries to tell you they are Chinese Spanish, Indian, Syrian and native American, they could be telling you the truth- they may just be Trinidadian.
There are some countries that are just racially mixed up like that and have been so for a good while. The amount of people who stop me in the street and ask me where the hell am I from.
Trust me, go with the above poster. I think some people would rather have one or two types of racial identity to feel that they ‘belong to’ rather than being so mixed. It’s just slot of people on this site assume everyone claiming multiple or unusual ethnic mixes are just trying to sound more exciting.
Personally I wish I was more of one thing in particular so I can say ‘I am part of This (x) culture’
Ii Loveeeeeeeeeeee Brunooo Marrsssssz !
why is it so difficult for people espically uneducated people to distinquish between RACE and ETHNICTY!
His RACE is multi-racial- fillipino, spanish and african, tanio (from Puerto Rico) This would be what would come out if he had a DNA test.
Hey, it’s not hard at all it’s just that some people find it really unfair. You see, in the early 1920’s the Cencus people in America wanted to establish Hispanic as a race but the Mexicans that live here shot down that title. Some people refuse to be seen as a race because they feel it limits them. You can say mixed with this and that but to them they don’t have that or this they are Hispanics. People of Spanish origin belonging to no set race. They don’t want that tag. They don’t want to be superior or inferrior in anyone’s eyes.
I understand your point of view, but you call them ‘people of spiansh orgin’, this confuses the sitation even more, 1. They are not spanish, spanish people are from spain, they are from ‘latin america’. 2. Most of them are not ethnically spanish, or ‘pure’ spainsh but actually african, or native.
true that @loz
‘most of latin america is mestizo’,
1. the countires like mexico, costa rica, chile, peru are mosty mestizo. (the boring countires)
2. the countires like panama, colombia, venezvula, brazil, domincan repbulic, Pr and cuba, are tri-racil and mullato.(the better cultures)
3. Brazil the biggest and best country in latin america, is proably the most african influence.
4. ‘latin america’ is diverse you cannot make statments about the whole of latin america.
5. IM mixed 50% african(straight from africa) and 50% european (from england).
What the f**k u talking about mexico not boring at least not all of it. Have you gone there like from head to toe went sight seeing probably not so i rest my point.
Any1 got a problem let’s fight
