His songs include “Just the Way You Are,” “Grenade,” “The Lazy Song,” “It Will Rain,” “Locked Out of Heaven,” “When I Was Your Man,” “Treasure,” “Gorilla,” “Young Girls,” “24K Magic,” “That’s What I Like,” the remix “Finesse,” “Wake Up in the Sky,” “Please Me,” “Skate,” “Smokin out the Window,” “Die with a Smile,” and, in a featured role, “Nothin’ on You,” “Billionaire,” “Lighters,” “Young, Wild & Free,” and “Uptown Funk.” He performs with his band the Hooligans, whose members are also his backup singers and disco dancers, and is also one half of R&B super-duo Silk Sonic, with Anderson .Paak; the two are known for their song “Leave the Door Open.” He also co-founded production team the Smeezingtons. His concert tours are some of the highest-grossing in history.

Bruno is the son of Bernadette del Pedro Bayot and Peter S. Hernandez, who were musically-inclined, his father performing rock and roll and his mother a singer and dancer. He was raised in Honolulu’s Waikiki neighborhood. Growing up, he was exposed to rock, reggae, hip hop, and R&B. He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 2003, for his music career.

His father is from Brooklyn, New York. Bruno’s paternal grandfather was Puerto Rican and Bruno’s paternal grandmother was Ashkenazi Jewish, of Hungarian Jewish and Ukrainian Jewish descent. Bruno’s mother was from Manila, Phillippines, and was of Filipino [including Cebuano and Tagalog], and some Spanish [Castilian], ancestry. Through his Puerto Rican line, he has at least 1/256th Italian ancestry.

He was nicknamed Bruno due to his resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino.

Bruno is a second cousin, once removed, of Filipino actor Eddie Gutierrez, and the third cousin of Eddie’s children, actors Tonton Gutierrez, Richard Gutierrez, and Raymond Gutierrez, and model Ruffa Gutierrez. Bruno’s maternal great-great-grandparents, Mariano Herranz Heras and Mamerta Cañizares Secuya, were also Eddie’s maternal great-grandparents.

Bruno’s paternal grandfather was Peter Hernandez (the son of Almecio Hernández Aquino and Fabiana Sebastiana Vázquez Garcia). Bruno’s grandfather Peter was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Almecio was born in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, the son of Manuel Hernández Muñoz and Mercedes Aquino Hernández. Fabiana was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, the biological daughter of José Vázquez Romero and María del Rosario García Betancourt, and was adopted by Bernardo Peña Martinez and Rafaela Perosa Gerardez.

Bruno’s paternal grandmother was Mildred Dubov (the daughter of William Wolf Dubovis/Dubov and Bella Berger). William was a Jewish emigrant, from Kiev, and was the son of Sholom Yoseph DuBovis and Malka Weissman. Bella was born in New York City, to Hungarian Jewish parents, Joseph Berger and Louise Wohlberg.

Bruno’s maternal grandfather was Romeo Amando Maria “Eugene” Herranz Bayot (the son of Jesús María Bayot Fuentes and Consolación “Consuelo” Herranz Cañizares). Romeo was born in Manila, Philippines. Jesús was also born in Manila, the son of Gabriel Bayot and Josefa Fuentes. Consolación was born in Segovia, Spain. Consolación’s father, Mariano Herranz Heras, was Spanish, from Nava de la Asunción, Segovia. Consolación’s mother, Mamerta Cañizares Secuya, or Mamerta Secuya Cañizares in Filipino, was born in Talisay, Cebu, Phillippines, the daughter of Alejo Cañizares Canindot, or Alejo Canindot Cañizares in Filipino, also of Talisay; and of Sabina Secuya Larombe, or Sabina Larombe Secuya in Filipino, of Minglanilla, Cebu. The surname Secuya is also spelled as Sycuya, which is of possibly Chinese origin, but it is not clear if Sabina had Chinese ancestry.

Bruno’s maternal grandmother was named Soledad San Pedro. Soledad was born in Baguio City, Benguet, Philippines.

People, people, people. When they said his father was Puerto Rican, they didnt say any thing about a black P.R. or a White P.R. Puerto Rican is a nationality not a race. Just like we are Americans but thats not a race.

    • Rachel says:

Black P.R ? White P.R? its all PUERTO RICAN !!! The nationality is HISPANIC and the Race is Puerto Rican. we all get that everyone is of “mixed ethnicity” but to say that someone isn’t something that they are is very offensive. if you’ve never been to any Hispanic countries, then you have no rights to talk about what they are & what they should represent & whatever else you guys say. because you guys are saying that “Dominicans & P.Ricans & Cubans try to act like they’re not black” because they aren’t they may have AFRICAN descent but not “black” everyone is getting mad because they don’t want to “admit it” and it’s offensive to everyone BUT have you ever thought that it might offend the Hispanic race? by making their culture, beliefs & ethnicity seem like nothing at all? … yeah i guess not!

      • Amber Berg says:

there is no such thing as Puerto Rican being a race lmao, Puerto Rican is a nationality- Nationality means what country you come from- Any race of people can come from any country, and technically there are a lot of black people in puerto rico, there are mostly mixed people in puerto rico, and there are also a lot of pure white people in puerto rico, judging by bruno mars looks he is def not a white puerto rican, probably mixed puerto rican! Alot of puerto ricos dont know they are mixed, or dont acknowledge being mixed, or dont care to know their history! They like saying they are spanish- which is really a white race- but little do they know real spanish people dont claim puerto ricans!

        • rafael says:

amber so latins speak, fake spanish?spaniards dont have to claim us,but ive never met one who denies spain settled in puerto rico did they stop being spaniards?if you met one tell them that if you leave spain you are still spaniard.tell them to come to the island, and stop believing in hollywood stereotypes ,freddie rodriguez and aubrey plaza are real prs playing prs on tv so we are finally starting to get real representation.

          • Amber Berg says:

????? I didnt get anything you just said. Puerto Rican is not a race it is a nationality! Nationality is described by what nation you are from! If you are Puerto Rican you are not a Spanaird! You may have Spanish history, sometimes you may not even have Spanish ancestors to be from Puerto Rico you just speak spanish. Like me I dont have English ancestors but I speak English

          • rafael says:

amber but if your ancestors left england you would be english,i think most people are under the impression that spanish people came to pr in 1493 and stopped coming.after that initial voyage puerto rico was mostly forgotten by spain until 1815,when they enacted the royal decree of garces,to bring non spanish whites to pr.thats why most prs will argue about their ancestors because we know where our grand fathers came from

  2. rockfan says:

anything but Black huh? we all have african decent in us. people saying “they’re half this, they’re half that, we’re from here, my people are from there..” please. stop denying. i agree with cali.

  3. Mixed Guy says:

Why do people immediately think that your mixed with black because you have naturally tan skin maybe their skin is tan because of where they live darker skin is adaptation that humans acquired to help protect them from the sun so people from places like PR,DR, Haiti
parts of Asia and Africa tend to have darker skin

    • loz says:

while this is a true to an extenxt… if you look at the history of PR,DR and haiti, their modern day populations have been heavily impacted on by the migration of africans between (1500-1800) to their countires! Therfore the majority of the time if an indivudal has ‘black’ (brown, or tan if they are moslty white) tint to their skin tone it is probaly due to african admixture!

  4. sally jane says:

Hmm.. i thought he was part indian

  5. Pippi says:

You know what I am tired of?
that if you are just a lil bit tan you are immedeatly part black.
    thats just ridiculous.
