His songs include “Just the Way You Are,” “Grenade,” “The Lazy Song,” “It Will Rain,” “Locked Out of Heaven,” “When I Was Your Man,” “Treasure,” “Gorilla,” “Young Girls,” “24K Magic,” “That’s What I Like,” the remix “Finesse,” “Wake Up in the Sky,” “Please Me,” “Skate,” “Smokin out the Window,” “Die with a Smile,” and, in a featured role, “Nothin’ on You,” “Billionaire,” “Lighters,” “Young, Wild & Free,” and “Uptown Funk.” He performs with his band the Hooligans, whose members are also his backup singers and disco dancers, and is also one half of R&B super-duo Silk Sonic, with Anderson .Paak; the two are known for their song “Leave the Door Open.” He also co-founded production team the Smeezingtons. His concert tours are some of the highest-grossing in history.

Bruno is the son of Bernadette del Pedro Bayot and Peter S. Hernandez, who were musically-inclined, his father performing rock and roll and his mother a singer and dancer. He was raised in Honolulu’s Waikiki neighborhood. Growing up, he was exposed to rock, reggae, hip hop, and R&B. He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 2003, for his music career.

His father is from Brooklyn, New York. Bruno’s paternal grandfather was Puerto Rican and Bruno’s paternal grandmother was Ashkenazi Jewish, of Hungarian Jewish and Ukrainian Jewish descent. Bruno’s mother was from Manila, Phillippines, and was of Filipino [including Cebuano and Tagalog], and some Spanish [Castilian], ancestry. Through his Puerto Rican line, he has at least 1/256th Italian ancestry.

He was nicknamed Bruno due to his resemblance to professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino.

Bruno is a second cousin, once removed, of Filipino actor Eddie Gutierrez, and the third cousin of Eddie’s children, actors Tonton Gutierrez, Richard Gutierrez, and Raymond Gutierrez, and model Ruffa Gutierrez. Bruno’s maternal great-great-grandparents, Mariano Herranz Heras and Mamerta Cañizares Secuya, were also Eddie’s maternal great-grandparents.

Bruno’s paternal grandfather was Peter Hernandez (the son of Almecio Hernández Aquino and Fabiana Sebastiana Vázquez Garcia). Bruno’s grandfather Peter was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Almecio was born in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, the son of Manuel Hernández Muñoz and Mercedes Aquino Hernández. Fabiana was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, the biological daughter of José Vázquez Romero and María del Rosario García Betancourt, and was adopted by Bernardo Peña Martinez and Rafaela Perosa Gerardez.

Bruno’s paternal grandmother was Mildred Dubov (the daughter of William Wolf Dubovis/Dubov and Bella Berger). William was a Jewish emigrant, from Kiev, and was the son of Sholom Yoseph DuBovis and Malka Weissman. Bella was born in New York City, to Hungarian Jewish parents, Joseph Berger and Louise Wohlberg.

Bruno’s maternal grandfather was Romeo Amando Maria “Eugene” Herranz Bayot (the son of Jesús María Bayot Fuentes and Consolación “Consuelo” Herranz Cañizares). Romeo was born in Manila, Philippines. Jesús was also born in Manila, the son of Gabriel Bayot and Josefa Fuentes. Consolación was born in Segovia, Spain. Consolación’s father, Mariano Herranz Heras, was Spanish, from Nava de la Asunción, Segovia. Consolación’s mother, Mamerta Cañizares Secuya, or Mamerta Secuya Cañizares in Filipino, was born in Talisay, Cebu, Phillippines, the daughter of Alejo Cañizares Canindot, or Alejo Canindot Cañizares in Filipino, also of Talisay; and of Sabina Secuya Larombe, or Sabina Larombe Secuya in Filipino, of Minglanilla, Cebu. The surname Secuya is also spelled as Sycuya, which is of possibly Chinese origin, but it is not clear if Sabina had Chinese ancestry.

Bruno’s maternal grandmother was named Soledad San Pedro. Soledad was born in Baguio City, Benguet, Philippines.

Where do you get your facts about P.R. having more blacks than DR and Cuba? It’s in the books my dear. DR shares an Island with Haiti which is all black and many cross the borders to intermarry and Cuba where most blacks slaves brought to the new world came by the ship loads with Spanish settlers to grow, refine the sugar cane ,tobacco and coffee. It was the blacks who were in the majority that revolted and made Cuba what it is today a Communist state. You need to do your homework and research before you make false statement.

  4. name's not important says:

This fool is part Black. What’s wrong with admitting you’re part Black? It’s very obvious…

Im from puerto rico! We are not a race but an ethincty ! He look like mix race with Negro. Most of my people are mix with Negro just like all latin carribean. That why we look so exotic and better then black americans. The british didnt want to mix with the blacks in the states lol.But the spanish love to mix with us back then with our indian brother and sister Remember the slave trade people lol You could tell by his feature he have negro in him.

    • STeVe says:

Actually, I cannot tell by his features that he has “Negro” in him. Many Native American and Pacific Islander (both of Asian/Mongoloid origin) groups share features that Bruno has – brown skin, wider nose, etc.

Look at some ancient Olmec Native American jade face-masks

      Brown skin!

These people fall under “Mongoloid” or East Asian in genetics, not “black” African.

But I’m not saying Bruno doesn’t have any Sub Saharan African blood in him, either. Maybe he does, but it doesn’t show much from what I can see. Just letting you know that the features Bruno has are found in many Asian peoples, and Bruno is half Filipino, so it’s not surprise either.

Black people even claiming Nicole Scherzinger is part black, but she is not.

We’ll have to wait for Bruno to take a DNA test and reveal the results to the world. It’s too bad they cancelled the George Lopez late night show! It was good, and I wish he kept up with the DNA testing! ‘Twas quite interesting and entertaining. :-)

Asian people come in many color shades and shapes. They have a lot more diversity than many assume they have. They don’t all look like the stereotypical Chinese or Japanese person, just like all Europeans don’t look like Brad Pitt or Dolph Lundgren.

      • me says:

Nobody of these photos you posted has curly hair like Bruno Mars

        • alex says:

Lol. You think curly hair just belong to black people? Even white people like Will Ferrel has curly hair. I’m from South East Asian where Bruno’s mom came from and curly hair is not rare thing here. Our features really similar to Bruno.

    • ... says:

first of all, not all of latin america is mixed, there are many people who are fully european, west african, indigenous, european and not all mixed people are mixed with african ancestry, that’s more prevalent in the caribbean areas while in places like Chile and Mexico most mixed people are European/Native mixed. Latin Americans are not some homogeneous people. Yes most PRs are part African though, although there are also many white Puerto Ricans and Puerto Rico also has a larger native descended population than the DR and Cuba.

Lastly, what’s wrong with being fully black? You do also realize most African Americans have European blood too right? Just not to the extent of Afro-Latinos

      • Soy Boricua says:

Some Blacks who are not some what mixed r not as attractive as mixed up ones and I aint talking about Bi racial Im talking about the light skin mixed looking ones who r sexy as hell and look Boricua. My opinion so dont hang me 4 it :) Soy Indio taino

        • ladyofstandards says:

Its perfectly fine to have a preference and think your sexy, but to put down another group of people to feel better about your self is ignorant. Dark skin people can be just as mixed as light skin people. looks can be deceiving, based on my personal experiences. Im darkin and both of my grand parents are very light skin and I look just like them. It seems like your trying to imply that every lightskin person looks better than a dark sin person because there light skin. Im sorry but if your unnattractive regardless of complexion then your just unnactractive. You obviously have not seen Kenya Moore. check out this link and tell me she is not gorgeous and yes her eye color and hair is all natural. She played in a movie called Trois and she was the prettiest woman in the movie, even more prettier than the light skin women in the movie. So your opinion of darksin black person not looking as good as a lightskin black person is not always true. I have seen plenty of unnatractive people from both sides.

          http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=kenya+moore&view=detail&id=18F82F1E4929FC42D0E2F7D0C196B4023B4C47C9&first=0
Darkskin people can have different facial features and hair textures as well as light skin people. People who use skin color to determine how mixed someone is and there attractiveness is stuck in the 18th century. This is the reason why minorites are taking a step backwards instead of forward. Its ok to say your beautiful but why do you have to mention how ugly someone else is in the process? Just sat your sexxii as hell and leave it at that. The insults toward another group of people is not necessary. The darksin vs. lightskin bs is ignorant and superfcial. There are more important things to worry about like the economy. Anybody who degrades and insults another minority group is ugly inside and out in my opinion.

        • jamekah says:

From what I know I’m black but many ppl tell me I look boricua

    • Soy Boricua says:

Im sorry but I agree Boricua tu sabes its true :) We r sexii as hell!

    • ladyofstandards says:

People like you who make ignorant comments like this is the reason why certain people from different ethnicities dont like each other. It is okay to have pride in your ethnicity but was it really neccessary for you to put down another group of people just to feel good about yourself? I am very darkin and both my grandparents are lightskin, but you dont see me sayin I’m better then everyone else. Outside appearences can be deceiving. For example just because someone looks mostly, white, black or whatever soesnt mean that they are. You can have family memebers who have skipped generations and look like a relative from many years back or even 100. It a shame that in 2011 people still use skin color, shade, and admixture to determine how better they are than someone. Also the word negro to me is very offensive. It is not better than the word nigga or n$%^$. You think your better than black Americans because of the contents of your DNA, then fine thats your opinion but somethings should be kept to your self. like Gemini _1980 above said, you are ignorant, have no class, and superficial if all you think about is race and ethnicity in the way that you stated. Your statement sounds very uneducated. This darkin vs. lightskin bs is why some of us non whites are fallin behind. Worry about the economy and stock market
