He was the son of Helen (Cave) and Alfred Hill, a circus clown and manager of a surgical appliance shop. His paternal grandfather Henry was also a circus clown.

Benny’s paternal grandfather was Henry Hawthorn Hill (the son of Joseph Henry Hill and Lydia Charlotte Hawthorn). Henry was born in Retford, Nottinghamshire.
