Asa Hutchinson is an American politician, attorney, and businessperson. A Republican, he was Governor of Arkansas, from January 13, 2015 to January 10, 2023. He was previously U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas, from September 1, 1982 to January 20, 1985, Chair of the Arkansas Republican Party, from January 1, 1991 to December 31, 1995, a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Arkansas, from January 3, 1997 to August 6, 2001, Administrator of the DEA, from August 8, 2001 to January 23, 2003, and Chairman of the National Governors Association, from July 8, 2021 to July 15, 2022.

He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 2024.

Asa is the son of Coral Virginia (Mount) and John Malcolm Hutchinson, Sr. He is married to Susan Burrell, with whom he has four children.

His brother is politician and lobbyist Tim Hutchinson (Young Timothy Hutchinson), who was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Arkansas, from January 3, 1993 to January 3, 1997, and a U.S. Senator from Arkansas, from January 3, 1997 to January 3, 2003. Tim’s children are politician Jeremy Young Hutchinson and attorney Timothy Chad Hutchinson.

Asa’s paternal grandfather was Young Simpson “Sim” Hutchinson (the son of John Malcolm Hutchinson and Sarah Smith Woodward). Young was born in Mississippi. John was the son of Alexander Simpson Hutchinson and Isabella Jane Hitch.

Asa’s paternal grandmother was Mary Jane Nighswonger (the daughter of William Asa Nighswonger and Elizabeth Jane “Bettie”/Betty Bohart). Mary Jane was born in Missouri. William was the son of Peter Paul Nighswonger and Nancy Barringer. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jacob Bohart, whose parents were German, and of Catherine Anne Cogdill.
