Antonio Machado was a Spanish poet. He was one of the leading figures of the Spanish literary movement known as the Generation of ’98.

Antonio was born in Seville, Andalusia, the son of Ana Ruiz Hernández and Antonio Machado Álvarez, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. He was married to Leonor Izquierdo, his muse, until her death.

Antonio’s paternal grandfather was Antonio Machado y Núñez (the son of Francisco Machado Rodríguez). Antonio was born in Cádiz, Andalusia.

Antonio’s paternal grandmother was Cipriana Álvarez Durán (the daughter of José Álvarez Guerra and Cipriana Durán y de Vicente Yáñez). José was born in Zafra, Extremadura. Cipriana was the daughter of Francisco Durán, a native of Puebla de Maestre, Extremadura.

Antonio’s maternal grandfather was surnamed Ruiz.

Antonio’s maternal grandmother was surnamed Hernández.
