Her family moved to Amsterdam in the mid 1930s, because of the Nazi regime in Germany. Her mother died in Auschwitz-Birkenau on 6 January, 1945. Her sister also died in Bergen-Belsen, in 1945. August was the son of Emanuel/Emmanuel Stern and Helena/Helene Schwarzschild. Cornelia was the daughter of Elkan Juda Cahn and Betty Cahn.

Anne’s maternal grandfather was Abraham Holländer (the son Benjamin Holländer and Sara Menken). Abraham was born in Eschweiler, Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, and had a business in industrial equipment. Benjamin was the son of Levy Holländer and Johanna Elkan. Sara was the daughter of Markus/Marx Andreas/Andres Menken and Eva Keller.
