Aly’s paternal grandfather was James I. Michalka (the son of Gustave/Gustav August Michalka and Edna Caroline Loll). James was born in Michigan. Gustave was born in Michigan, to German parents, Frank August Michalka and Mary Venefky/Venefly. Edna was also born in Michigan, also to German parents, Warner Loll and Henrietta Etta Krahn.
Aly’s paternal grandmother was Betty Anne Martin (the daughter of David Martin and Amelia “Emily” Yurk). Betty was born in Michigan. David and Amelia were both immigrants from what is listed as Russia. It is likely that they were both of ethnic German descent.

looks like a average white girl..
michalka is definitely a east european surname.
Michalka does sound like a Czech and Slovak name. Just out of interest why is Bohemia used here? That’s like calling Thailand Siam.
Czechoslovakia and Slovakia didn’t exist at the time when some of these migrations would have taken place (the 19th century). At the time, Bohemia was often listed as the birthplace on records, and the Kingdom of Bohemia was a state.
Thanks for the Wikipedia link. I edited the Ukrainian claim out of it.
That book you cite is just composed of entries from the Wikipedia category “Ukrainian-language surnames”, in which “Michalka” was once included (but no longer).
Can you find any Ukrainians with this surname? I thought I found one, but it turned out to be a fictional character.

For all I know, there’s a Ukrainian out there with this surname, just as there could be a Ukrainian out there with the surname “Smith”. That wouldn’t change the fact that most people named “Michalka” are not of Ukrainian descent.
its not ukrainian surname.maybe its bohemian or polish
I would have said it’s a Czech name (through its form – definitely West Slavic – and because it’s a common name in Germany), but it looks like Slovakian is more likely:
