Also, Eric’s maternal grandmother Lorna had deep lines in America, and I found some distant Dutch and Scottish in her tree.
His surname pronounced as “sh-muhn-duh”
I’m not sure. But I’ve found Henryk Rossa, a Polish lawyer who was born in Madgeburg, Germany.

“and of Mary, who was German.”
Mary was Polish. Her surname was Imanski.
Was Charles/Casmer Szmanda ethnically Polish?
Yes.
This is his parent’s marriage record:

Angelina/Amelia Rossa (it means “Red”) and Paul Cinquemani (“Five Hands”) are Italian names
http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Descendants_of_Anthony_Szmanda
Paul Cinquemani was the son of Italian parents. But he wasn’t Szmanda’s ancestor.
Yes, I see. But Angeline/Angela/Amelia Rossa does not sound Polish at all.
The surname Rossa doesn’t seem to be uncommon in Germany and Poland, and Angeline/Angela/Amelia was born in Prussia.

We already discussed here that short surnames can be tricky. Do you know which is etimology for the Polish form of “Rossa” surname?
I’m not sure. But I’ve found Henryk Rossa, a Polish lawyer who was born in Madgeburg, Germany.
