She is the daughter of Jean W. and Erbon Powers “Tom” Sawyer, a county judge. She was married to director, producer, actor, and comedian Mike Nichols, until his death.
Diane’s paternal grandfather was James Alexander Garfield Sawyer (the son of Frederick Hartwell Sawyers and Sarah Mackey). James was born in Kentucky. In this interview she said she is mostly Scotch-Irish with a bit of English and German. I’m not sure if she has Irish ancestry because she’s talking about Banbridge which is in Northern Ireland.
