Martin Schulz is a German politician. He has been Chair of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, from 14 December, 2020. He has also been Mayor of Würselen, from 1987 to 1998, Member of the European Parliament for Germany, from 19 July, 1994 to 19 February, 2017, Leader of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, from 15 July, 2004 to 17 January, 2012, and again, from 18 June, 2014 to 1 July, 2014; President of the European Parliament, from 17 January, 2012 to 17 January, 2017, Leader of the Social Democratic Party, from 19 March, 2017 to 13 February, 2018, and Member of the Bundestag for North Rhine-Westphalia, from 24 October, 2017 to 26 October, 2021.

His father, Albert Schulz, a police officer, came from the Saarland, and grew up in a mining family who had social-democratic tendencies. His mother, Clara, from a middle class background, was a founding member of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) in her hometown, Würselen.

Martin is married to Inge. He has two children.
