Ron Paul is an American author, physician, and politician. As a Republican, he was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas, from April 3, 1976 to January 3, 1977, again from January 3, 1979 to January 3, 1985, and again from January 3, 1997 to January 3, 2013.

He was the Libertarian Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1988. He was also a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 2008 and 2012.

While he was not a candidate, he received an electoral vote for President from a faithless elector in the 2016 presidential election.

Ron is the son of Margaret (Dumont) and Howard Caspar Paul. With his wife, Carol Jean (Wells), Ron has five children, including politician Rand Paul.

Ron’s father was of German descent. Ron’s mother was of three quarters German and one quarter Irish ancestry.

Ron’s paternal grandfather was Caspar Paul (the son of Georg Johannes Paul and Anna Baer/Bär/Beer). Caspar was born in Hohenzell, Schluchtern, Prussia. Georg was the son of Johannes Paul and Katharina Merx. Anna was the daughter of Johann Heinrich Baer and Anna Margarethe Frischkorn.

Ron’s paternal grandmother was Sophia Ziegler (the daughter of George Ziegler and Gertrude Herche). Sophia was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, to German parents, a father from Kressenbach, Hessen and a mother from Wallroth, Hessen-Darmstadt. George was the son of Peter Ziegler and Anna Maria Berthold. Gertrude was the daughter of Wilhelm Hersche/Herche and Gertrauda Jockel.

Ron’s maternal grandfather was Joseph J. Dumont, Jr. (the son of Joseph J. Dumont and Margaret W. Davis). Ron’s grandfather Joseph was born in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Ron’s great-grandfather Joseph was German, the son of Adam Dumont and Anna Marie/Eva Heinz/Hynes. Margaret was born in New York, to Irish parents, Paul Davis and Mary Gannon.

Ron’s maternal grandmother was named Lena Wolfram (the daughter of Chris Wolfram and Caroline “Lena”). Ron’s grandmother Lena was born in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, to German parents.
