Kathryn Bigelow is an American film director, producer, and writer. She won the Academy Award for Best Director for The Hurt Locker (2009). She is the first woman to have won.

She is the daughter of Gertrude Kathryn and Ronald Elliot Bigelow.

Kathryn’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her eight times great-grandparents, John Biglo/Bigelow and Mary Warren, who were from Suffolk, England. Kathryn has described her mother as a “very stoic Norwegian Lutheran.”

Kathryn’s paternal grandfather was Cecil Elliot Bigelow (the son of Granville Alexander Bigelow and Sarah Louise Wilhite). Cecil was born in Missouri. Granville was the son of Rufus Bigelow and Henriette/Henrietta Elizabeth Everman/Eversman. Sarah was the daughter of William Wilhite and Martha.

Kathryn’s paternal grandmother was named Maude Lulu Folkers (the daughter of Richard V. Folkers and Sarah J.). Richard was German.

Kathryn’s maternal grandfather was Samuel Larson (the son of Jens Reseland/Larsen and Kari Johannesdatter Fet). Samuel was born in Wisconsin, to Norwegian parents. Jens was born in Reseland, Hafslo, Sogn og Fjordane, the son of Lars Samuelsen Reseland and Margarethe Jensdatter. Kari was born in Fet, Hafslo, the daughter of Johannes Olsen Fet and Ragnild Augundsdatter Melheim.

Kathryn’s maternal grandmother was Bertha L. Dahl (the daughter of The Rev. Andreas Larsen Dahl and Gjertrud/Gertrude Amundsen). Bertha was born in Wisconsin. The Rev. Andreas was born in Dalen, Nord-Aurdal, Oppland, Norway, the son of Lars Nilsen Dalen and Berthe Nilsdatter Lund. Gjertrud was born in Wisconsin, the daughter of Norwegian parents, Anders Amundsen Vambheim, from Vambheim, Ulvik, Hordaland, and Sara Larsdatter Ødven, from Ødven, Ulvik.
