Brendan Coyle is a British actor. He is known for his roles in The Weir on stage, and on television’s North & South, Lark Rise to Candleford, and Downton Abbey, as well as the latter’s film sequels.

He was born in Corby, England, to an Irish father, Patrick, from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and a Scottish mother, Delia, from Belshill. His great-uncle, his grandmother’s brother, was Scottish footballer and football manager Matt Busby (Alexander Matthew Busby). He holds British and Irish citizenship.

Brendan’s maternal grandfather’s surname was Anderson.

Brendan’s maternal grandmother was the daughter of Alexander Busby and Helen “Nellie” Greer. Her family was from Orbiston, Bellshill, Scotland.
