Xavier Bettel is a Luxembourgish politician. He has served as Prime Minister of Luxembourg, and Minister for Communications and Media, both, since 4 December, 2013. He was previously Mayor of Luxembourg City, from 24 November, 2011 to 4 December, 2013. He is the country’s first openly gay Prime Minister.

Xavier is the son of Aniela and Claude Marcel Bettel, a wine merchant. His father is said to have had a Russian father and a Polish mother. His mother is from France, and appears to be of Russian and Ashkenazi Jewish descent. His great-great-uncle (great-grandfather’s brother) was Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the late Romantic period, Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Xavier is married to Belgian architect Gauthier Destenay.

Xavier has stated:

I’m of Polish and Russian origin, with Catholic, Jewish, Orthodox and atheist grandparents.

Xavier’s maternal grandfather was named Maurice Spiro. Maurice likely was Jewish.

Xavier’s maternal grandmother was named Vera Rachmaninova (the son of Arkady Vasilyevich Rachmaninov). Vera was born in Russia. Arkady was the son of Vasily Arkadyevich Rachmaninov and Lyubov Petrovna Butakova.
