Sterling is the son of Mary Alice and Pete Sharpe. His brother is professional football player Shannon Sharpe, who is an NFL Hall of Fame tight end.

Sterling’s maternal grandfather was Barney Porter (the son of William Mitchell Porter, Sr. and Mahala Shipman).

Sterling’s maternal grandmother was named Mary Viola Washington.
