He is the son of Leona and Rolland Root. Stephen is married to actress Romy Rosemont. He has a son with his former wife Laura.

Stephen’s paternal grandfather was Floyd Clair Root (the son of Charles Delbert Root and Alliah/Allia Delphia Bronson). Floyd was born in Utah. Charles was the son of Almon Sylvester Root and Helen Augusta Cole. Alliah was the daughter of Clinton Doneral Bronson and Lovisa Andrews.
