Samad Vurgun was an Azerbaijani and Soviet poet, dramatist, and public figure. He was the first People’s Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR, and a laureate of two Stalin Prizes of second degree. He was an academician of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. He was given the title “The Poet of Public.” His poem “Azerbaijan” is very well-known in the country.
He was born in Kazakh Uyezd, a Salahly village, now Qazax District, Azerbaijan Republic. His mother died early, and he was raised by his father and maternal grandmother. He was married to Khaver khanim Mirzabeyova, with whom he had three children, including writer Yusif Samadoglu and poet Vagif Samadoglu.
Samad’s maternal grandmother was named Ayshe khanim.
