He is a nephew of husband-and-wife television presenters Peter Overton, who is his mother’s brother, and Jessica Rowe.

Sam’s patrilineal line can be traced to Gustav Julius Rechner, an ethnic German, who was born, c. 1830, in Legnica, Legnica County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland.

Sam’s paternal grandfather was Roger Rechner (the son of Colin Alfonso Rechner and Edith Alice Kirsch). Roger was born in Sydney, New South Wales, and was of German descent, with his ancestors having been immigrants to Australia in the mid 1800s; they were from Silesia and Pomerania, including Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Colin was the son of Alwin Rechner and Elisabeth Hedwig Hoffmann.

Sam’s paternal grandmother was Fay Gwendoline Osborne (the daughter of Marjorie Dance). Fay was born in Pymble, New South Wales, Australia, and was of largely or entirely English descent. Marjorie was the daughter of Frederick Dance, whose father was from Ledbury, Hertfodshire, England, and of Emily Rodier.

Sam’s maternal grandfather is Dr. John Overton. John was an associate professor of anaesthesia at the University of Sydney, and worked at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Sam’s maternal grandmother was surnamed Macintyre.
