Paul Martin, Sr., also known as Paul Joseph James Martin, was a Canadian politician and diplomat. A member of the Liberal Party of Canada, he was a Member of Parliament for Essex East (ON), from October 14, 1935 to April 19, 1968, the 12th Secretary of State for External Affairs, from April 22, 1963 to April 19, 1968, a Senator for Windsor-Walkerville, Ontario, from April 20, 1968 to October 30, 1974, and a Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, from October 31, 1974 to November 1, 1979, among other duties.
He was the son of Lumina (Chouinard) and Joseph Philippe Martin. Paul’s father was of half Irish and half French-Canadian descent. Paul’s mother was of French-Canadian and 1/32 Scottish ancestry. He was married to Eleanor Alice “Nelly” Adams, until his death, with whom he had two children, including Paul Martin, who was the 21st Prime Minister of Canada, from December 12, 2003 to February 6, 2006.
Paul’s paternal grandfather was James Martin (the son of James Martin and Bridgit/Brigite/Bridget Brady). Paul’s grandfather James was an Irish emigrant, from County Mayo. Paul’s great-grandfather James was the son of James Martin and Jane Craig. Bridgit was the daughter of Peter Brady and Suzanne Judith Gary.
Paul’s paternal grandmother was Louise Emma Lemaire (the daughter of Félix Hyacinthe Lemaire and Luce Arthémise Barsalou). Félix was the son of Antoine Hyacinthe Lemaire and Marie Josephte/Joseph Felix. Luce was the daughter of Jacob Barsalou and Luce Dorion.
Paul’s maternal grandfather was Guillaume Charles Pierre Chouinard (the son of Guillaume Chouinard and Marie-Ermina Melina/Elmina Marier). Paul’s grandfather Guillaume was born in Montreal, Communauté-Urbaine-de-Montréal, Québec. Paul’s great-grandfather Guillaume was the son of Eustache Chouinard and Josephte Campbell. Josephte’s paternal grandfather, William Campbell, was a Scottish immigrant from Edinburgh. Marie-Ermina was the daughter of Benoît/Benoni Marier and Marie Houle.
Paul’s maternal grandmother was Marie-Albina Philion/Filion (the daughter of Alexis Alexandre Philion and Françoise Gosselin). Alexis was the son of Étienne Gaspard Filion and Cécile Bussiere. Françoise was the daughter of Charles Bussiere and Marie Catherine Drolet.
