He is the son of Matías Prats Cañete, born in Villa del Río, Córdoba, and Emilia Luque Montejano. His son, Matías Prats Chacón, is a sports journalist.

Matías’ paternal grandparents were Juan José Prats Cerezo and Manuela Cañete Molina, both with antecesors from Jaén. The surname Prats is of Catalan origin.
