Martin Heinrich is an American politician and businessperson. A member of the Democratic Party, he has served as a U.S. Senator from New Mexico, since January 3, 2013, and Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, since February 3, 2021. He has also been a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New Mexico, from January 3, 2009 to January 3, 2013.

Martin is the son of Shirley, a seamstress, and Peter Heinrich (born Heinrich Peter Karl Cordes), a utility company lineman. His father was a German emigrant, who was born in Waldenburg, in 1930, and moved to the U.S. as a child, living in New Mexico, California, and Nevada. Martin’s father took his own stepfather Olaf Heinrich’s name, then changed his name to Pete Carl Heinrich.

Martin is married to Julie Hicks, with whom he has two children.

Martin’s paternal grandmother was named Helen.

Martin’s maternal grandfather was Lester Edd Bybee (the son of James Edward Bybee and Margaret “Maggie” Dunlap). Lester was born in Buhl, Idaho. James was the son of Solomon Bybee and Mary Frances “Fanny” Alford. Margaret was the daughter of Joseph Dunlap and Mary Jane Gollaher.

Martin’s maternal grandmother was Juanita P. Cutshalts (the daughter of Frederick Archie Cutshalts and Eleanor Cruse). Juanita was born in Idaho. Frederick was born in Ohio, the son of Fredrick Cutshalts and Melinda/Matilda W./M. Lindley/Lindsey. Eleanor was born in Missouri, the daughter of William A. Cruse and Virginia B. Myers.
