Levi P. Morton was an American politician. A Republican, he served as Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1889 to March 4, 1893. He was elected to the postion in 1888. He was also a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from March 4, 1879 to March 21, 1881, U.S. Minister to France, from August 5, 1881 to May 14, 1885, and Governor of New York, from January 1, 1895 to December 31, 1896.
Vice President Morton was the son of Lucretia and The Rev. Daniel Oliver Morton, a Congregationalist minister. His parents were both of Colonial American descent. His brother was attorney and politician Daniel O. Morton, who was Mayor of Toledo, Ohio, fromn 1849 to 1850. His nephew, sister’s son, was diplomat, lawyer, banker, and author William Morton Grinnell, who was Third Assistant Secretary of State, from February 15, 1892 to April 16, 1893.
Vice President Morton was married to Lucy Young Kimball, until her death, and then to Anna Morton, until her death. He had a daughter with Lucy, and six children with Anna.
Vice President Morton’s paternal grandfather was Levy/Livy Morton (the son of Ebenezer Morton, Jr. and Sarah Cobb). Vice President Morton’s grandfather Levy was born in Middleborough, Plymouth, Massachusetts, and fought in the Revolutionary War. Ebenezer was the son of Ebenezer Morton and Mercy/Marcy Foster. Sarah was the daughter of James Cobb and Thankful Thomas.
Vice President Morton’s paternal grandmother was Hannah Dailey (the daughter of Daniel Dailey/Daily and Hannah Turner). Hannah was born in Easton, Massachusetts. Daniel was the son of John Daily/Dayly and Mary Martha Whitman.
Vice President Morton’s maternal grandfather was Justin Parsons (the son of Benjamin Parsons and Rebecca Sheldon). Justin was born in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Benjamin was the son of Ebenezer Parsons and Mercy Stebbins. Rebecca was the daughter of Benjamin Sheldon and Mary Strong.
Vice President Morton’s maternal grandmother was Electa Frary (the daughter of Nathan Frary and Elizabeth Barnard). Electa was born in Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts. Nathan was the son of Nathaniel Frary and Mehitable Dickinson. Elizabeth was the daughter of Ebenezer Barnard and Elizabeth Foster.
