John Paul Stevens was an American lawyer and jurist. He served as Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, from November 2, 1970 to December 19, 1975, and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from December 19, 1975 to June 29, 2010. At the time of his retirement, he was the second oldest-serving Justice, and the third longest-serving Justice, in court history.

Justice Stevens was the son of Elizabeth (Street), a high school teacher, and Ernest James Stevens, a lawyer, who owned the hotels La Salle and the Stevens Hotel. The hotels were built by the Justice’s grandfather James W. Stevens. He was raised in Hyde Park, Chicago.

Justice Stevens was married to Maryan Mulholland Simon, until her death. He had four children with his former wife Elizabeth Jane Sheeren.

Justice Stevens’s paternal grandfather was James William Stevens (the son of Socrates Stevens and Amanda Jane Stevens). Justice Stevens’s grandfather James was born in Colchester, McDonough, Illinois. He founded the Illinois Life Insurance Co. Justice Stevens’s great-uncle owned the Chas A. Stevens department store and catalog business. Socrates was the son of James Stevens and Nancy Miles. Amanda was the daughter of William D. Stevens and Mary Myler.

Justice Stevens’s paternal grandmother was Jessie Louise Smith (the daughter of Albert Joseph/James Smith and Frances Augusta Cuyler). Justice Stevens’s grandmother Jessie was born in Vermont. Albert was Canadian, the son of Joseph M. Smith and Eliza E. Westover. Frances was the daughter of Charles H. Cuyler and Louisa Field.

Justice Stevens’s maternal grandfather was Richard Willison Street (the son of Richard Street and Elizabeth Robertson). Justice Stevens’s grandfather Richard was born in Wisconsin. Justice Stevens’s great-grandfather Richard was born in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland, to English parents. Elizabeth was born in Perthshire, Scotland.

Justice Stevens’s maternal grandmother was Helen Elizabeth Cass (the daughter of Milo Cass and Julia Roberts). Helen was born in Rochelle, Ogle, Illinois. Milo was the son of Moses Cass and Elizabeth/Betsey Mott. Julia was the daughter of Lewis Roberts.
